What are your intake years?
Mentone Girls' Grammar School accepts students at all year levels where places are available. The major intake years, however, are Prep and at Years 5, 7, 9 and 11, subject to availability.
Do I have to enrol my child for five days in the Early Learning Centre?
No. We are able to offer parents a flexible, three, four or five day program at our Early Learning Centre.

How many students are at the School?
Mentone Girls' Grammar School is a Kindergarten to Year 12 school set on a single campus. School has a maximum enrolment of 700 which enables us to ensure small class sizes which deliver the personalised / differentiated learning experience for which we are renowned.
Do you have waiting lists at Mentone Girls' Grammar School?
Waiting lists operate at numerous year levels and we encourage families to enrol their daughters as soon as possible. Placements are confirmed up to eighteen months prior to entry when our Registrar’s Office contacts the family to confirm interest in a place for the specified year level. The parents/guardian complete an enrolment questionnaire and send a copy of the student’s latest school report. We then organise an interview with the Principal or Head of Junior School, as appropriate. Offers of a place are usually made after this interview.
Can my daughter spend some time at the School before we make a decision?
Yes! We encourage families to consider our “Mentone-girl-for-a-day” program. In conjunction with Heads of Year and Home Group Teachers, our Registrar will work out a day that is mutually suitable. To be a “Mentone-girl-for-a-day”, please contact the Registrar on 9581 1200.
What programs do you offer for talented students?
The SAIL Program (Supporting Advanced and Independent Learners) at Mentone Girls’ Grammar School aims to provide educational opportunities for students identified as highly able, including underachieving highly able students.
SAIL classes and activities supplement the ongoing provision of a differentiated curriculum that is expected of every teacher at Mentone Girls’ Grammar School. SAIL is a flexible and multi-faceted program that provides opportunities for extension, enrichment and acceleration through a variety of approaches including multi-age groups, ability groups and involvement in subject-based activities and competitions.
Many opportunities for highly able students occur within the regular school timetable and some activities are available beyond school hours. The structure and features of the program vary according to the age and stage of the students.
In our Junior School, our highly able students are invited to undertake Everest units that are structured as a withdrawal program from regular classes.
In the Senior School, we provide for our highly able students through accelerated and multi-age classes as well as co-curricular activities. Senior School SAIL opportunities are open to all students; our SAIL students are specifically invited to participate in classes and activities aligned to their intellectual strengths and areas of interest.
Do you have the IB?
Mentone Girls' Grammar School is currently at Pre-Authorisation stage to teach the IB Primary Years Program in the Junior School. Our Senior Years Program, from Years 7-10, accommodates parents wishing to enrol for the IB Diploma elsewhere.
VCE / VET and University Enhancement subjects are offered in the Senior School.
How do your VCE results compare?
Our class of 2008 produced a fine set of VCE results. Key achievements were:
- 100% pass rate
- DUX of 2008 achieved an ENTER of 99.55
- 6% of the Class ranked in the top 1% of the State with ENTERs of 99+
- 19% of the Class ranked in the top 5% of the State with ENTERs of 95+
- 35% of the Class ranked in the top 10% of the State with ENTERs of 90+
- 60% of the Class ranked in the top 20% of the State with ENTERs of 80+
Do you offer scholarships?
Mentone Girls' Grammar School’s offers a number of academic and music/academic scholarships for students with special talents and high abilities. These scholarships are offered for entry in Years 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11, but intake levels vary from year to year. Scholarship testing is conducted in February each year, so please check our website in November / December for details of registration.
The School also offers Everest Scholarships to children from Years 3. Everest Scholarships are awarded to highly able students.

Do you have boarding facilities?
No. Mentone Girls' Grammar School is a day school only. For overseas students, we have an affiliation with EduCare and every assistance is given to students to secure safe, appropriate Homestay accommodation.
What languages do you offer?
In Junior School students study German from Prep-Year 2, French in Years 3 and 4 and Japanese in Years 5-6.
In Years 7-12, we offer French, German, and Japanese. Students in Years 7 and 8 study two out of the three language choices as part of the core curriculum.
ESL is also part of the languages offering at Mentone Girls' Grammar School.
Through our Mentone Institute of Languages & Culture (MILC), students from within and outside the School can study out-of-hours VCE languages. Currently, we are offering VCE Chinese (Mandarin) as a First Language and Second Language on Friday evenings from 4.30pm to 7.30pm in our Cobbalanna Senior College. Do you have a special Year 9 program?
Yes. We have a Year 9 Challenge Program that teaches life skills, promotes adventure and creativity and fosters community spirit through volunteering.
What sports do you offer?
Mentone Girls' Grammar School competes in the Girls’ Sport Victoria (GSV) competition, which involves the 24 Independent Girls’ Schools in the Melbourne metropolitan area. Sports include swimming, diving, water polo, softball, cross country, athletics, netball, soccer, badminton, tennis, basketball, gymnastics, hockey, aerobics, Surf Life Saving and numerous carnivals.
Our Junior School competes in the Inter-School CDPSSA competition and EXTEND sports programs after school.
What music opportunities are available?
Students have the opportunity to experience music right from Prep! A hands-on approach begins with the Years 2 and 3 strings program and the Years 7 and 8 Performing Arts program.
Private tuition in a multitude of instruments is available, as well as private Speech and Drama and Dance classes.
Most girls who play a musical instrument perform in one of the several orchestras, bands or ensembles. For the vocalists a range of choirs is available.
Do you have a private bus service?
The School is served well by public transport and seven private charter bus routes; Brighton, Southland via Black Rock, Dingley, Endeavour Hills via Dandenong, Mt Eliza via Frankston and Mordialloc; Patterson Lakes via Dingley and Bonbeach.
Do you have out of hours care?
Yes. We run our own Before and After School Care program. Additionally, students from Year 5 are able to go to the Kerferd Library after school for quiet study and homework if this option is more appealing for parents.
