Highly Able Learners
SAIL Program
At Mentone Girls' Grammar School, we were well known for our primary Everest program designed for gifted and talented students. In recent times, this program has been transformed into our SAIL Program, a broader program designed to Support Advanced and Independent Learners.
The singular objective of SAIL is to recognise, promote and advance the education of students who possess very high intellectual ability in the supportive and structured environment of the School. The program involves teachers across all levels and people with expertise that they can share with our students.
All students are tested when they first enter the school and regularly as they grow through each year level. As a result, the particular intellectual, social and emotional needs of gifted students are identified and supported throughout their schooling with specialist subjects, subject and level acceleration and mentoring opportunities.
Years 3 to 6
the SAIL program provides opportunities for highly able students to participate in Philosophy, Advanced Mathematics and Classical Studies (including Latin). Each year, in August, the School invites applications from primary girls entering Years 3, 4 and 5 in the following year to sit for a SAIL Scholarship. The SAIL Scholarship is tenable to the end of Year 9, when students then have the opportunity to sit for a continuation scholarship from Years 10 to 12.
Years 7 to 10
students identified as SAIL program students are invited to participate in activities and competitions that are aligned with their areas of talent. Some SAIL students will also participate in accelerated programs in Mathematics and/or Japanese.
