Glückwünsche! Felicitations! Congratulations! Language program delivering exceptional results!
The School is committed to delivering curriculum programs that maximise the learning potential of each student. The teaching of Languages other than English (LOTE) is one of these important programs. By offering Japanese, German and French programs (New Greek program, see below for details) we are contributing to the many advantages students gain from learning other languages, including language awareness, linguistic development, cognitive development, educational development, social psychology, communicative sensitivity, categorisation skills, concept formation, mental flexibility, as well as divergent, creative and convergent thinking.
As a result of this exemplary program, it is with great pride that we acknowledge the success of our German students Xafina Dendrinos (Year 8) who came second and Jess Smith (Year 9) who was awarded a Special Mention, in the State Final of the Poetry Competition held by the Association of German Teachers in Victoria (AGTV) at the Austrian Club on the 30th August this year.
In our French, German and Japanese programs over 160 students ranging from Years 7 to 9 participated in the Assessment of Language Competence Certificates, organised by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). This is a statewide event where students conduct Listening and Reading comprehensions (Certificate 1: Listening only).
This is a wonderful event for our language students as it provides some external feedback on their academic progress. Comprehensions are not based on the syllabus offered at Mentone Girls' Grammar or at any other school, so the students are really challenged during the testing process.
Special mention must go to Year 10 student Judy Chow who obtained a PERFECT score in both Listening and Reading Comprehensions and fellow Year 10 student Stacey Grant who also obtained a PERFECT score in the Listening component of the certificate.

Through our LOTE program, we aim for our students to grow in confidence, maturity and appreciation of others and different cultures, to broaden horizons, and to ensure our students become true global citizens.
GREEK NOW ON OFFER: We are now offering Modern Greek at Mentone Girls' Grammar School on Friday after school through the Greek School. This program is open to all students internal and external to the School, so should you wish for your daughter, or son to learn Modern Greek, please contact Wendy Meier on 9581 1200.
