Mentone Girls support Women of the World
International Women's Day (IWD) has been a special week-long event on the Mentone Girls' Grammar School calendar for many years, and 2009 was no exception. With a range of activities held from 2-6 March, in the lead up to IWD on 8 March, the student-run IWD Committee worked tirelessly to bring about the awareness of current global issues relating to women and their communities.
Students from all year levels participated in a variety of activities dedicated to inspire, encourage, inform and entertain - ranging from the highly successful Senior School IWD Concert to the gifted girls who participated in the Junior School Talent Quest.
Students in Years 11 and 12 were invited to attend the IWD Mentors' Breakfast, where they were asked to invite a woman who is inspirational to them. Whilst indulging in food donated by Bakers Delight Mentone, the Sandringham Fruit Market, as well as items donated by staff and students, guests had the privilege of hearing one of the Schools remarkable old girls, Sarah Walker, discuss her life since leaving Mentone and her aspirations for the future.
Through the sale of Kachin pin dolls, ribbons and bracelets, the IWD Committee raised over $1,400 for the International Women's Development Agency, who will donate the proceeds to women in need in Asian and South Pacific regions.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone from our community who was involved in IWD this year and hope the event continues to grow bigger and better each year.
