Bringing communities together
What better way to bring two communities together than with a basketball game followed by a good old fashioned BBQ! On the 2 April, we held our second annual Social Inclusion Project basketball match involving a number of our Mentone girls together with girls from the Sudanese community.
The gym was alive with energy and the fast-paced friendly game saw some fantastic play by all of the girls involved. A number of the students had been involved in the event in 2008 and it was wonderful to see friendships strengthened and a real sense of camaraderie develop between the girls. At the end of the game, all of the girls signed two basketballs, one that was kept by the School and one that was kept by the Sudanese girls as a wonderful mark of friendship. The girls were then awarded a commemorative medal.
This basketball game is just one of the events on our Social Inclusion Project calendar of activities and is part of our commitment to support the creation of a cohesive Australian society by strengthening the long relationship we have had with our local Sudanese community. Our Social Inclusion Project is an ongoing program that includes fundraising to provide tuition at our School for Sudanese girls and we hope to be able to provide a scholarship for one student to join us in the near future.
Many thanks to our wonderful Parents' Association for their catering, as well as our sponsors; Dobsons who provided the uniforms, and the City of Kingston for generously funding the transport for our Sudanese friends to and from the event.
