Mentone Girls receive Premier's VCE Award
Two remarkable Mentone girls received Premier's VCE Awards for outstanding VCE results in 2008.
Jennifer Frees received a Premier's VCE Award for Multimedia and Gayatri Tennakoon received an Award for English, at a special ceremony on Tuesday 21 July at the Melbourne Convention Centre, officiated by the Hon John Brumby MP, Premier of Victoria.
Each year students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in the VCE are recognised at the Premier's VCE Awards. The ceremony not only acknowledges the outstanding results of individual students, it also pays tribute to principals, teachers and parents who play an invaluable role in supporting and encouraging students during their VCE studies.
Principal Fran Reddan who attended the ceremony said that it was wonderful to see academic achievement acknowledged in this way.
"Behind every student is a team of remarkable teachers, dedicated family members and friends who support each student's educational journey and it was wonderful to see these people supporting Jennifer and Gayatri on this special day.
"I felt incredibly proud to have our School represented so well at this celebration of excellence and agree with the Governor of Victoria, Professor David de Kretser AC who said that it was so important for the media to take more of an interest in celebrating academic excellence, in addition to wonderful achievements in sport.
"As teachers we know the thousands of hours our students spend on their studies. This takes an incredible amount of resilience, so to be acknowledged publicly in this way is vitally important and sends a wonderful message of encouragement to future VCE students," said Principal Reddan.
In a letter congratulating the School, Mark Dreyfus MP, Federal Member for Isaacs said he was pleased to see schools and students in the electorate achieving such outstanding results.
"I believe that a good education is the foundation stone for the future, and provides many opportunities and the ability to make a difference in the world. Mentone Girls' Grammar has achieved admirably in educating students to the highest level, whilst instilling in students a dedication to their studies and a pride in their work. The school, students and parents are to be congratulated on these results," wrote Mr Dreyfus.
