Mentone Girls’ Grammar dominated the competition at the Australian Schoolaerobics, Dancestar & Glee National Championships on the Gold Coast at the weekend, winning a staggering 19 medals.

The School was represented by 63 students from Years 5 – 12, winning 13 gold, 5 silver and 1 bronze medal during the three-day event, making it their most successful competition at Nationals to date.

Head of Sport, Ms Libby Lewin said, “Just to qualify for Nationals, our students had to compete against 800 schools Australia-wide so to medal at Nationals is a huge achievement. The high calibre of performance and professionalism our girls displayed throughout the competition was fantastic and even though the few who didn’t medal at Nationals received extremely high scores.”

Renowned for its comprehensive sports program, Mentone Girls’ Grammar offers aerobics and dance as an extra-curricular activity for students from Year 3 onwards.

Ms Lewin said, “Aerobics and dance are one of the most popular sections in our sports department. The numbers continue to increase every year with more and more students participating in the preliminary rounds. With the technical expertise of Jess Hayes, our Head Coach, we are now regarded as one of the best schools in Australia.

“Jess’ enthusiasm and energy is infectious and that really translates to our student’s performances on stage. Most of them learn everything, from proper technique to choreography, from Jess and our coaches, many of whom are past students.

“A highlight was seeing our 2016 Sports Captain, Bridget Gertzel, who blitzed at Nationals for the past seven years, win another gold medal in the ‘Old Skool’ category, as well as mentor our only Junior soloist, Abbey Fink, who placed first in the ‘Primary Creative Singles’ category. There is a real sense of pride and passing it each through the generations at Mentone Girls’ Grammar,” said Ms Lewin.

Other highlights included winning the ‘Secondary Mega Team Category’, that involved 33 students dancing the story of Aladdin, as well as placing second in the ‘Secondary Jazz Team Large’ with a rendition of Boogie Wonderland.

Ms Lewin said, “It was wonderful to see students, who hadn’t even placed or qualified the previous year, win a gold medal at this year’s Nationals. It was a demonstration of true grit, determination, passion and teamwork.”
