Mentone Girls’ Grammar will represent Victoria enmass at the National Championships in Queensland after dominating the Dancestar & Glee State Finals at the weekend.

The School will send 63 girls across the Dancestar, Glee and Schoolaerobics categories to the National Championships to be held on the Gold Coast from 4 – 6 August.

33 Mentone Girls’ students from Years 8 – 12 competed at the Victoria Dancestar & Glee State Finals in Ringwood on Saturday 17 June, winning seven gold, two silver and one bronze medal.

They won the Secondary Mega Troupe category with their Aladdin-inspired dance, which involved all 33 students.

Head Aerobics Coach, Ms Jess Hayes, said there was little to separate the top teams and performers with the standard of competition having improved year on year.

“We expected to be challenged and we really were. The Solo and Duo sections were particularly hard with about 45 soloists and 23 duos in the prelims so to even make it to the finals and be in the top six in the State was very pleasing.”

“Our Secondary Mega Troupe scored a very high 88.3 with their Aladdin routine. That section at Nationals is always a fan highlight and can be hotly contested so we’re rapt to not only have made it but also having produced a popular, high quality routine,” she said.

“Hailey Shepherd, one of our soloists won both the Junior Downtempo solo and the Lyrical Audition Challenge. So far this year she has won every competition she has entered in these sections so her training and consistency is paying off.”

Lily Walker was another standout for Mentone Girls’ Grammar, winning both her Glee sections, solo and audition challenge and scoring a high 80‘s for her Glee solo once again.

“A personal highlight for me was seeing our 2017 Aerobics and Dance captain Sarah Carty compete her solo in the Senior up-tempo section and come away with the silver medal, only 6 months after undergoing hip surgery. Such a great result,” Ms Hayes said.

“There are approximately 800 schools involved in the Dancestar & Glee qualifying rounds, so now that our Mentone dancers are through to Nationals, they will be going up against the 100 schools across Australia.
