Year 8 student at Mentone Girls’ Grammar School, Sunday Hollingsworth, impressed judges at the 2017 Australian Gymnastics Championships earlier this month, winning a gold and silver medal in two trampolining events.
Sunday, aged 12, competed in three events on the day, placing 1st in U15 Double Mini Trampoline and placing 2nd in the Youth Synchronised Trampoline. Due to these fantastic results, she placed in the Top 12 in the Youth Trampoline category, beating 30 other trampoline gymnasts across Australia.
Sunday trains at the Cheltenham Youth Club (CYC) in Braeside and says her favourite thing about the sport is the people.
“At first, I started trampolining as a fun hobby, but quickly discovered how much I loved it and being surrounded by such supportive and caring people. Now, I have been training professionally for eight years and have met the most wonderful mentors and friends.
“The high standard of competition is intense, and I was thrilled to qualify for the Australian Gymnastic Championships, let alone win two medals! I have to say a big thank you to my trainers, my teammates and my family for supporting me every step of the way and helping me accomplish my dreams to represent Victoria in a national championship,” said Sunday.
Sunday will continue training trampolining at the CYC and hopes to compete in international events one day.
