Mentone Girls’ Grammar School Year 5 student, Sabrina Johnson, has her sights set on one day competing for Australia at the Commonwealth Games after winning five gold and one bronze medal at the Judges Invitational Gymnastics Competition in Geelong last month.

She will now prepare for the Victorian Championships qualifiers on 7 – 8 October 2017.

Sabrina, aged 10, won first place in the beam, bars, floor, team and overall individual categories, as well as third on vault.

The year 5 student, who has been practising gymnastics since the age of two, competed against 44 other girls in all age groups across Melbourne to place in the Top 3.

Sabrina says her biggest inspiration is her sister, Kiara, who also attends Mentone Girls’ Grammar in year 9.

“I have always looked up to my sister and want to keep developing my gymnastic skills so I can be at her level. My favourite activity in gymnastics is definitely the floor because I can express myself through movements and tricks, and I love getting to do all that fun stuff.

“I train approximately 3 – 4 hours on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, so I’m always learning something new. I would love to compete at the Commonwealth Games one day, that’s my big dream!” said Sabrina.

Head of Junior School, Ann Mathers, said, “We are so thrilled to hear about Sabrina’s wonderful success at the Judges Invitational Gymnastics Competition! We will continue to support her every step of the way as she works towards her goal.”
