Co-curricular sport activities and have always been major ingredients in the making of strong, confident Mentone Girls. Led by Head of Sport, Ms Libby Lewin, our comprehensive programs promote both physical and mental strength, team work, improved energy and concentration levels, and a healthy balanced lifestyle.
Our philosophy is to encourage our students to embrace new opportunities and to take full advantage of our involvement in Girls Sport Victoria (GSV) competitions, one of the largest independent girls’ school sporting associations in Victoria.
As a member of GSV, our students from Years 7 – 12 have the opportunity to be compete against 23 other independent girls’ schools in the Melbourne metropolitan region and be involved in more than 20 sports through weekly sport competitions, carnivals, tournaments and skills development programs. GSV matches are played after school, not on weekends, enabling students to participate in community based sports. Year 7 students are invited to a Sports Expo that coincides with Health and Physical Education Week and is one of the most fun filled events on the GSV calendar. Girls learn skills in a wide variety of activities from GSV core sports to others including Lacrosse and Wheelchair Basketball. GSV also conducts other skills development clinics and events throughout the years, such as Diving, Fencing, Golf, Track Cycling, Triathlon, as well as a special Sport Leaders Breakfast.

We are also a member of School Sport Victoria (SSV), which allows our young sportswomen to trial for their chosen sport and if successful continue through the selection process to be part of the State team. In addition, we enter a golf tournament every year with Victorian Primary Schools Golf. Our Primary students also have the opportunity to participate in competitive Gymnastics, Sailing, Snow Sports, Dance and Aerobics.
Students can also join one of our Mentone Meerkats netball teams on Saturdays at the Kingston District Netball Association (KDNA), levels ranging from Net Set Go to Open.
The Mentone Girls' Grammar School Aerobics Squad competes in the Schoolaerobics and Dancestar competitions with an extremely successful record, sending teams to the State Finals every year, and teams to the National Finals for the last 15 years. Jess Hayes is the Head Coach of the Mentone Girls' Grammar School Aerobics Squad. Jess has 17 years’ experience in teaching and performance, of which 15 years have been as a School Aerobics Coach, and Jess is also a Schoolaerobics judge. There are also several assistant coaches who work closely with Jess to ensure students have the opportunity for feedback from more than one coach on their progress. Open to both Junior and Senior School students, the aerobics season runs from February to November and girls are expected to commit for the entire year and attend all scheduled training sessions and competitions with their team.
Matilda the Meerkat
The Class of 2015 left the legacy of ‘Matilda the Meerkat’, which is now the official sporting mascot for our School. Since then, the impact of Matilda on our sporting teams has been immense. No sporting team has left for competition without their official Matilda paraphernalia and she has even launched her own sporting Instagram account. While the meerkat presents itself as a laid back creature, it has a fiery side when provoked and should never be underestimated, just like our Mentone Girls! We also hold a Sports Dinner with Champions where we celebrate our dynamic, talented and spirited Mentone Meerkats. Our annual Sports Dinner recognises individuals and teams for their outstanding achievements throughout the year and the important role sport plays in the active lives of our students.
As part of our Year 12 leadership initiative, our Senior students can apply for the prestigious position of Sports Captain, as well as Swimming Captain, Aerobics & Dance Captain, Cross Country Captain and Athletics Captain throughout the school year. These roles are responsible for organising and conducting training sessions, providing advice to younger students, assisting the Head of Sport with any adhoc duties, and most importantly, advocating the Mentone Meerkats brand in the lead-up and at the event/tournament. As part of our Junior School leadership initiative, new Sport Captains and House Captains are elected each year, which allows our Year 6 students to have a large leadership role in the organisation of House Carnivals.
Sports Excellence Camp
The annual Sports Excellence Camp is a selective entry program designed to hone the skills and competitive edge of our most promising and dedicated sportswomen in Years 10 - 12, exposing them to the potential reality of being professional athletes and pushing their physical and mental boundaries. The camp rotates between inner-city, inter-state and abroad destinations across a three-year cycle.
