At Mentone Girls' Grammar, we recognise the importance of early childhood education in building the foundation for our youngest learners future success. This is why we have established the Sarah Simpson Early Learning Centre (ELC), where we offer a nurturing and stimulating program for children. We honour the Sarah Simpson educational philosophy, 'to be bold, to do one's best, and to never give in.' Our three-year-old Kindergarten program and four-year Pre-Prep programs are designed to encourage children's natural curiosity and motivate them to develop a lifelong love of learning through play and inquiry.

In 2022, our ELC was assessed and rated as Exceeding National Quality Standards by the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority.

Our principles and practices are guided by the International Baccalaureate's® Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF) and the national Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF).

We believe children learn best through play, and inquiry, and seek to foster the potential of each child by supporting their learning and development in relation to their identity, connection with the community, sense of wellbeing, confidence as learners, and effectiveness as communicators.

Curriculum

Our ELC curriculum provides a holistic balance of play-based inquiry and intentional teaching experiences that stimulate our youngest learners' cognitive and physical development, develop their literacy and numeracy skills and build their emotional and social intelligence. Our program is enriched with a diverse range of specialist classes each week, taught by specialist early years’ teachers. The classes include:

Leading the Way

Beach Kinder

Our prime beachside location gives our girls the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the local environment through our Beach Kinder Program.

Through this program, students explore the Mentone Beach foreshore, allowing them to develop an awareness of local and indigenous culture, the interdependence of living things and the impact of human choice in respect to the environment.

The opportunities to engage in nature and sensory play during Beach Kinder provides our youngest learners a myriad of physical, social and wellbeing benefits, and fosters their independence, healthy risk-taking and problem solving skills.
