Mentone Girls' Grammar Junior School Music Teacher to Attend 26th International Kodály Symposium
Mentone Girls' Grammar is proud to announce that Alahana Somerville, the Junior School Music Teacher, will be representing the school at the prestigious 26th International Kodály Symposium. The event is scheduled to take place from July 31 to August 4, 2023, at the renowned Colburn School of Music in Los Angeles, California.
The symposium, held bi-annually, serves as a global platform for aspiring and experienced music educators, ethnomusicologists, and musicians to come together and exchange ideas, resources, and perspectives in music education. This international gathering aims to educate, engage, support, and foster connections among professionals in the field.
Alahana's attendance at the symposium is made possible through Mentone Girls' Grammar's Professional Learning Bursary. This invaluable opportunity will allow her to enhance her music pedagogy and bring back globally enriched teaching techniques to benefit the students of Mentone Girls' Grammar.
Research conducted by Martin Guhn of the University of British Columbia highlights the profound impact of music learning on students' academic progress. He found that highly engaged students in music education were academically over one year ahead of their peers who were not involved in school music programs.
Alahana expresses her gratitude to the school community for providing her with this opportunity to participate in the 26th International Kodály Symposium. She eagerly anticipates engaging with fellow educators from around the world, gaining valuable insights, and enriching the musical experiences of the students at Mentone Girls' Grammar upon her return.
By investing in professional development opportunities for its staff, Mentone Girls' Grammar continues to demonstrate its commitment to fostering a thriving music program and providing an exceptional educational experience for its students.
