Mentone Girls' Grammar

Declared the Aerobics, Dancestar and Glee Overall Secondary School Winner 2020

Mentone Girls' Grammar has won the 2020 Australian Secondary School of the Year award for the TFT/Schoolaerobics, Dancestar and Glee.

It is the inaugural year for this type of prestigious award due to the entire Schoolaerobics and Dancestar competition schedule shifting to an online environment as a result of COVID-19. Despite the challenges of a team training in insolation, Mentone Girls’ Grammar continued to practice before and after school hours over Zoom.

The award was judged on overall points in events, judges’ feedback and 'overall wow factor' across the board. Mentone Girls’ Grammar School is renowned for producing high calibre performances in Aerobics, Dancestar and Glee. It is an unbelievable achievement by Head Coach Ms Jess Hayes, Head of Sport Ms Libby Lewin, the supporting coaches and the Squad team members from Years 7 – 12. An achievement made even more incredible considering Victorian schools could only enter singles event due to the extended restrictions we endured.

“When our fabulous Head Coach arrived at Mentone Girls' Grammar in June 2001, she coached one dance team which grew into three the following year. In 2019, we had our most successful year, winning 40 medals at Nationals. In 2020 we had 20 teams, 10 duos and 40 soloists ready to compete. The first competition of the season on March 14 was rushed to a virtual forum and ended up being the only opportunity our teams had in 2020 to compete together. The passion and enthusiasm of the squad and their ability to adapt to the virtual forum showed their resilience and creativity. Being named Australian Secondary School of 2020 is a huge honour and a well-deserved credit to our coaches and athletes,” said Head of Sport, Ms Lewin.

“I was proud of everyone for all their efforts and results and it showed that our hard work this season paid off,” said Year 9 student Kaila M.

“It is a privilege to be the first school to receive this award,” said Year 11 student Sophia D.

In addition to the award, Mentone Girls’ Grammar student Anastasia Bearsley was named Vocalist of the Spring Series.
